Stump grinding across the Central Coast.

We grind stumps and major surface roots down below ground level so you can re-turf, pave, build or replant — no more mowing around it, tripping over it, or watching it sprout suckers. Narrow-access grinders fit through a standard side gate to reach backyard stumps. Free written quote, and we leave the wood-chip mulch for your garden if you'd like.

What stump grinding involves.

Why grind the stump at all?

A left-behind stump is more than an eyesore. It's a mowing obstacle and a trip hazard, it can re-shoot (many eucalypts and weed species sucker vigorously from a cut stump), and a rotting stump becomes a home for termites and fungal decay close to the house. Grinding it out clears the ground so you can lay lawn, build a deck, pave, run a fence line or plant something new in the same spot. It's the natural finish to a tree removal.

Grinding vs full excavation.

Grinding uses a rotating tungsten-tipped cutting wheel to chew the stump and major surface roots into chip, below ground level, with minimal disturbance to the surrounding garden. It's quick, clean and the right choice for almost every residential job. Full excavation — digging the entire root ball out — is far more invasive and costly, and we only recommend it where the whole root system genuinely has to go, such as directly under planned footings, a slab or a pool. For most Central Coast yards, grinding is what you want.

How deep, and what's left.

For lawn or garden beds we grind 200–300mm below the surface — deep enough to turf or plant shrubs over the top. If you're laying a slab, paving, footings or a pool, tell us and we grind deeper and chase the major lateral roots so the area is properly clear. Stump grinding produces a pile of wood-chip mixed with soil; we rake it back into the hole to settle, or remove it and leave clean chip you can use as mulch on the garden — your call.

Access — tight Central Coast blocks.

Lots of Central Coast backyards are steep, narrow or only reachable through a side gate. We run narrow-access stump grinders that fit through a standard gate (around 700–900mm) to reach stumps without pulling fencing apart. Very tight or elevated sites may need a smaller machine, and we'll note that in the quote. If there's a retaining wall, rock or underground services near the stump, let us know up front so we plan the cut safely — we use Dial Before You Dig where there's any doubt about buried services.

2026 price guide.

A minimum callout of around $200 applies because the grinder has to be transported to site. Beyond that, price tracks stump size and species:

  • Small stump (under 30cm): roughly $100–$200.
  • Medium (30–60cm): roughly $150–$350.
  • Large (60–100cm): roughly $250–$500.
  • Very large (100cm+): roughly $400–$800.
  • Multiple stumps, one visit: the per-stump price drops noticeably.

Dense Central Coast hardwoods (spotted gum, blackbutt, ironbark) sit at the top of each band because they're slower to grind than softwoods. Having a tree taken out too? Bundle the grind with the removal in the same visit and save the second callout.

Why we don't cut corners.

A stump ground only to soil level looks done but re-shoots and stays a trip hazard — so we grind properly below grade and chase the surface roots that matter. We check for services before we start, guard against thrown debris, and protect nearby paving, pool edges and walls. Cheap, shallow grinding is a false economy you pay for twice.
